The Grassroots Approach
This article is to inform you about something that is so American in it's application as to be revolutionary. There are small groups of brave souls all across our land taking responsibility for their own lives and destiny. They are not content to simply bemoan their distress and difficulties. Make no mistake, they are in dire distress. These are not the elite and powerful in our midst. They are the meanest of us and yet representative of all of us and that which is best in us.
Who are these valiant champions of responsibility and self-improvement?
They are groups of lower income workers all across America who have joined into a grassroots coalition and created manufacturing co-ops in order to gain economic stability and a better life for their families. Not content to take the Uncle Tom's (Sam) hand out and live in misery, these great souls have embraced what it is to be American and work hard to build economic freedom for themselves.
Sustainable Business
They are making organic clothing and accessories in Ohio at Esperanza Threads Co. where unemployed low-income workers create attractive items for sale and everyone in the co-operative shares in the work and the reward. It's not a top-down company where the CEO collects all the money and the workers toil for low wages. It's a true co-operative effort and is growing steadily. The result is a stable and growing business which is based on ecologic sustain-ability and economic justice and lifts hundreds of workers out of poverty.
This is just one example of people who heard the message "Yes, we can" and went out and did.
The American dream isn't just for slick young executives or wall street tycoons. It's for everyone in America. That's what it is to be American.
